MTB 4 Day 2017

7 Aug 2017

Dear visitors

The annual iSimangaliso MTB 4 Day mountain biking event takes place within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park as well as surrounding conservation and adjacent community areas. This year’s event takes place from 16-20 August, beginning in the uMkhuze section of the iSimangaliso World Heritage Site and ending at the Sugarloaf campsite in the Lake St Lucia Estuary section.

The MTB event is the single major source of fund raising for iSimangaliso’s Rare and Endangered Species Fund which has grown to approximately R1 million over the five years since inception. This money is exclusively used to support priority conservation projects in the Park, including provision of tracking collars for lion, elephant and rhino, introduction and relocation costs of animals such as oribi and the relocation and dehorning of rhino in certain sections of the Park.

The marquee and tented camp setup for this event will take place in Mantuma Resort area from the 14th August, and we apologise in advance for the activity which will be confined to the immediate vicinity of the rest huts and chalet area. The uMkhuze section is closed to the public from the evening of 16 August to the morning of 18 August for the event.

The ride then proceeds via the Phinda Private Game Reserve, False Bay section of iSimangaliso, several private reserves and community lands to reach the Western Shores on Saturday 19 August and the Eastern Shores on Sunday 20 August. During these dates we will have marshals in place to direct riders and traffic where the route overlaps with public areas. The end point is at the Sugarloaf campsite on Sunday.

We ask for your understanding and support as we continue to promote iSimangaliso and raise funds for our valuable conservation efforts – and if you happen to see our riders, please give them a hearty cheer for sterling efforts, riding some 260km over four days and raising an enormous amount for iSimangaliso’s rare and endangered species conservation activities in the process!.
