More than 420 species of birds can be found in this 38 500ha bird-lovers’ paradise! Leopard, black and white rhino, elephant, giraffe, wild dog, cheetah, hyena and various antelope are also to be seen. A guided walk through the Sycamore Fig Forest to the aerial canopy boardwalk, game spotting at the world-famous kuMasinga Hide and a visit to the iNsumo Pan are favourite activities for visitors to uMkhuze.
There are three accommodation options in uMkhuze. On the western entrance to this section of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park is the eMshophi Campsite. The main accommodation facility is found in the Mantuma Camp which has a range of cottages, rest huts and en-suite safari tents. The 8-bed Nhlonhlela Camp is a bush lodge where the services of a cook and guide are included in the rate.
N2 from the south: Turn right at the uMkhuze sign, 35km after Hluhluwe. Continue along a gravel road crossover the railway line then turn left. Continue for 8km then turn right to get to the eMshophi Gate after 9km.
N2 from the north: Drive through the town of Mkuze and turn right at the T-junction. Continue along a gravel road for 6km. Turn left at the sign indicating the uMkhuze section of iSimangaliso. Continue for 9km until you reach the gate.
From Mbazwana head south on the R22 for 28km then turn right onto the D820. Continue along this road for a further 14km and then turn left at the sign to uMkhuze.
From Hluhluwe drive north along the R22 for 50km then turn left onto the D820. Continue along this road for a further 14km and then turn left at the sign to uMkhuze.
Please Note: Park gate access procedures will be changing its access systems at the Bhangazi, Dukuduku, Nhlozi, eMshophi, Ophansi and Sodwana gates, as of 1 December 2016. The new system will automate some of the current manual systems and assist with security in the Park. On entry your driver's licence and car licence will be scanned and you will be asked to sign acceptance of the terms and conditions of entry to the Park. You are required to pay cash for your entry fee at the gates.
Ice, books, cold drinks and some basic supplies are available at the reception office. The Rhin-o-Dino restaurant is open as follows: 07h00-09h30, 11h30-14h00 and 17h00-19h00.
