Western Shores & Charters Creek

See elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard, as well as giraffe, tsessebe and other antelope species – or sit back and enjoy panoramic views of Lake St Lucia and the Eastern Shores dunes.


Currently the accommodation at Charters Creek is closed. A rebuild is underway and new facilities are due to be completed during 2016.


Western Shores Section

  • Self drive game drives – enter at the Dukuduku Gate (near St Lucia) or the Nhlozi Gate and enjoy the new section of the Western Shores

Charters Creek

Currently open to day visitors only – fishing from the shore and by boat (enquire about Lake levels prior to arrival)

Getting there

Western Shores

Dukukduku Gate: Follow the R618 from Mtubatuba to St Lucia, to the Dukuduku Gate situated on the left hand side 2km before reaching the town of St Lucia.

Nhlozi Gate: Turn off the N2 20km north of Mtubatuba or 32km south of Hluhluwe towards Charters Creek. Continue along the tar road for 13km to reach the Nhlozi Gate. Follow the road signs pointing right onto the Western Shores.

To reach Charters Creek, travel a further 5km on gravel road to get to the Charters Creek day visitor facility.

Park entry

Western Shores section – Dukuduku and Nhlozi Gates (Charters Creek entry)

  • Gate opening and closing times:
    • April to October – 06h00 to 18h00
    • November to March – 05h00 to 19h00
  • Entry fee:
    • Adults – R45
    • Children (under the age of 12) – R35
    • Vehicle entry charge:
      • R55 for 1-5 people
      • R80 for 6-12 people
      • R110 for 13-20 people
      • R190 for 21+ people
  • Community Levy: R5 per person

Please Note: Park gate access procedures will be changing its access systems at the Bhangazi,  Dukuduku, Nhlozi, eMshophi, Ophansi and Sodwana gates, as of 1 December 2016. The new system will automate some of the current manual systems and assist with security in the Park. On entry your driver's licence and car licence will be scanned and you will be asked to sign acceptance of the terms and conditions of  entry to the Park. You are required to pay cash for your entry fee at the gates.
