In December 2006 iSimangaliso became the first and remains the only World Heritage Site/National Park to permit the use of Personal Water Craft (“PWC”) for the purpose of fishing within the Park and its marine protected areas (MPAs). This was done in order to allow access to off shore fishing to the PWC fraternity on a one year trial basis. During the first year this activity was monitored and at the end of the year it was decided by iSimangaliso to continue to permit PWC access at public launch sites. Strict conditions on numbers, design and safety were outlined in the Park Internal Rule.
