Drowning incident in St Lucia

It with deep sadness that we report a drowning incident which took place this Sunday 22nd November at Jabula Beach in St Lucia, iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

According to the preliminary report received, a male estimated to be between 19-21 years was swimming with his friends when he drowned and disappeared around 15h30.

National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) was called to the scene to search for the drowned person and could not recover the body at the time. The search continued from early hours today in an attempt to recover the body.

The incident has been reported to the South African Police Services and an inquest docket has been opened.

iSimangaliso Wetland Park which stretches from Maphelane, South of St Lucia up to Kosi Bay on the Mozambican boarder has 220km of coastline with various areas demarcated for swimming. Since June 2020 to date, four (4) incidents of drowning have been reported in the Park. As the festive season approaches, revellers are requested to exercise caution especially during adverse weather conditions.
