iSimangaliso creates 300 job opportunities through the cleaning and greening project

17 July 2023
iSimangaliso has created 300 job opportunities for people living in communities neighbouring the Park. This comes after the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE) mandated iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority to rollout the Cleaning and Greening project in three local municipalities in KwaZulu-Natal. The DFFE realized that more efforts are needed if the environment is to be protected from pollution and conceptualized a national Municipal Cleaning and Greening Programme.
iSimangaliso is leading the implementation of this project at uMhlabuyalingana local Municipality, Big 5 Hlabisa local Municipality (project is implemented in Hluhluwe) and uMtubatuba local Municipality through its appointed service providers, 100 people have been employed in each mentioned Municipalities. iSimangaliso engaged with Municipalities, Amakhosi and other community leaders to assist in identifying families and focus areas that are engulfed by poverty in each municipality so that they can be prioritised. The CEO of iSimangaliso Mr Sibusiso Bukhosini has commended the partnership and co-operation received from these stakeholders which has made the implementation of this project a great success.
The aim of this Programme is to fight the environmental degradation and ensure that our country is free from harmful environment and people live in protected environment for the benefit of current and future generations. This is done through mass public employment of the unemployed with a special prioritization of women, youth and people living with disabilities. This programme is about keeping public spaces clean and tidy, whilst ensuring that people are benefiting at the same time. Beneficiaries of this program assist in cleaning Municipality town, roads, parks and sport grounds, etc. This programme also seeks to strengthen community development through self-regulation.
Members of the Department of Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment recently visited iSimangaliso to conduct a follow-up on the project implementation in municipality areas where this project is being implemented.
iSimangaliso’s mission is to protect, conserve and present its World Heritage values for current and future generation whilst benefiting communities living in and adjacent to the Park.
