Sightings of whales are common off the coast of iSimangaliso.
Whale watching is one of the most popular tourist activities on offer in iSimangaliso. South Hemisphere Humpback whales make up the majority of whale sightings in KwaZulu-Natal. This species tends to be more spectacular and lively with its breaching than Southern Right whales, which are also commonly sighted off our shores. As a result, whale watching tour groups in iSimangaliso – particularly Sodwana Bay – are often treated to magnificent performances.
Several species of whales regularly pass by the KZN coastline on their annual migrations. During summer they feed in the Antarctic, and in winter they head north to breed in the tropical waters of Mozambique and Madagascar. The coastal waters surrounding South America, Australia and New Zealand are also popular breeding grounds for these marine mammals.
