iSimangaliso’s Marketing Manager Lindy Duffield is simply popping with excitement at the prospect of meeting two legendary South African actors, Popeye and Spinach, at the upcoming Sodwana Bay Festival commencing this week.

Well known for their former roles on SABC 1’s show ‘Zone 14’ a few years ago, South African celebrity entertainers Kere Nyawo and Thulani Didi still go by their character names of Popeye and Spinach.

With a long history of acting, entertainment and teaching under their respective belts, the duo has a non-profit organisation called Positive Arts Society, where they train and develop local talent. They also own a production company called Pop and Spin Entertainment. They are taking on a new challenge at this year’s Sodwana Bay Festival by getting involved in the community drive that has a strong focus of the redesigned annual event.

Together with the Red Crush Multimedia Marketing team, iSimangaliso has come up with a great television concept where the pair explores the iSimangaliso Wetland Park World Heritage Site – including both of them learning how to swim and surf in the warm waves of Sodwana Bay through the event’s free community teaching programmes. While they are in Sodwana Bay they are going to shoot a pilot episode for an adventure conservation comedy series.

Popeye and Spinach believe that they can bring to life the unique attributes and challenges of a World Heritage Site and once again engage and entertain hundreds of thousands of South Africans who may themselves never have visited the sea or considered the vital importance of preserving it for their own recreation and tourism opportunities. According to Red Crush producer Noel Kok, “They both feel that the conservation of our natural resources especially in South Africa’s first World Heritage Site, is extremely important for both current and future generations which is why they are so excited to be part of a television series that promotes this.”

Says Duffield: “We are hugely excited to have these lively gentlemen joining the fun and helping us to encourage participation by our youth at Sodwana. It’s going to be an epic Festival!”
